Customer demand for low-calorie sweeteners has been increasing for several years. In 2018, the UK introduced a 'sugar tax' that imposes a tax of £0.18 per liter on beverages containing more than 5 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters, among other anti-sugar policies being implemented worldwide, which has heightened interest in alternative sweeteners.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the popularity of alternative sweeteners such as allulose has been rising in South Korea as well.
According to E-Mart, from January to July 23 of this year, sales of alternative sweeteners like allulose, stevia, and Sweetvia have increased by 17.3% compared to the same period last year, surpassing the growth rate of sugar sales (10%).
